Restoration of First World War Memorial Bells

The Memorial Community Church situated in Plaistow East London was opened in 1922 and was dedicated to the men from the church and local community who were killed in the First World War. At the very top of one of its two towers is a chime of ten bells that were installed in 1925 to commemorate those who died. The bells also feature the names of 169 local men and are also operated by an unusual clavier system. The bells needed to be completely restored and cleaned and in addition the church wanted to improve access to them. The local community has been actively involved in the project and a local youth club has provided an exhibition at ground level and a website www.localheroes.org about the bells and the fallen servicemen they honour. The rededication of the bells as a war memorial took place on Saturday 19 November 2012.
