FAQs about applying for a grant

We now fund Community Benefit Societies (CBS) and Community Interest Companies (CICs) limited by guarantee within our Preservation and Conservation and Research, Advocacy and Development grant programmes. We require some additional information to show how your work is legally charitable. The Charities Act 2006 defines charitable work as one of these 13 descriptions of purposes and is for the public benefit. We will ask to share or show:

• A copy of your constitution – a document that outlines the rules that will govern the organisation – to check that: there is sufficient public benefit; there is good governance; and there is protection against private gain.
• A minimum of three directors, the majority of whom should not be paid employees.
• The salaries and benefits of employees are approved by a majority of non-executive Directors.
• In the case of organisations that are not registered charities – an asset lock clause in their constitution designed to ensure that the assets of an organisation, including profits or surpluses generated, are used for the benefit of its community or to further its activities and mission.

If you are eligible you will receive a link to our Stage One application form on our online grants system, Flexigrant. Flexigrant has clear instructions on how to fill in the application forms.

Stage 1: submit key details about your project so that we can check its eligibility. You’ll get a response within four weeks.

Stage 2: set out your application in full. You can apply at any time within 12 months after a successful Stage 1 application.

Yes, you can apply more than once. But talk to your Grants Manager or the Director first – they will be able to advise you whether your new application is a good investment of your time.

No. However, we can tailor funding to meet the needs of your work and include project delivery costs, core costs, salaries and general running costs.

Our responses to grant applications depend on which grant programme you apply for. In general, decisions are made quarterly at our Trustee meetings. Visit our Grants at a glance page to find grant schedules and deadlines.

Each year we carefully review how the previous funding round has gone and where our funds can be used most effectively going forward. We hope to increase the geographical reach of the programme each year, but exact details will be announced after each year’s review.
