During our September Trustee meeting, we were delighted to award 16 grants coming to a total of £242,000 from our Preservation & Conservation programme. Below we share a little about each grant and its purpose.
The St. Andrews Preservation Trust maintains several properties of historic significance in St Andrews, including the 17th century, Grade B listed, St Andrews Heritage Museum and Garden. Our grant of £20,000 will go towards the repair and restoration of the museum’s roof.
The English Heritage Trust cares for 420 historic site across England, including Kenwood House on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Our grant of £10,000 will go towards the cleaning and repair of the Georgian, Bath House in Kenwood House.
Built in 1897, the Morecambe Winter Gardens is a Grade II* listed, At Risk theatre that the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust Ltd is working to bring back into full use. Our grant of £12,000 will go towards urgent interior repairs, including repairs to the mosaic floor and ceramic features.
Much loved by the local community, the Dufftown Clocktower is four-storey, Grade B listed tower. The Dufftown and District Community Association (DDCA) wants to transform the clocktower into a community space and one-bed holiday accommodation. Our grant of £10,000 will bring the design up to RIBA stage 4, putting DDCA in a stronger position to raise capital funds.

Habitats & Heritage cares for the natural, historic and climate environment in south and west London, including managing the Grade II listed, Grove Gardens Chapel. Our grant of £10,000 goes towards further development works to help Habitats & Heritage decide the best future for the chapel.
Middleton Hall is a wonderful set of historic, Grade II* and Grade II listed buildings, which span seven centuries of English domestic architecture. The Middleton Hall Trust looks after hall and our grant of £18,000, alongside funding from Historic England, will go towards urgent roof repair works.
Nunhead cemetery is the second largest and least known of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries in London. Southwark Council is restoring the ruined Grade II listed, At Risk, East Lodge in the cemetery to create a central hub for the local community. Our grant of £20,000 will go towards conserving the historic fabric of the lodge and supports the wider capital project.
Trademark Training is a trade union and peace-building organisation in Northern Ireland that is currently leading a collective of cooperatives and charities wishing to establish a “Community and Cooperative Hub” in Belfast. Our small grant of £5,000 will help fund a conservation statement and further building reports on the suitability of a potential historic building for the Hub.

Colchester’s Balkerne Water Tower, affectionately known as ‘Jumbo’, is the largest Victorian municipal water tower in England. The Colchester and North East Essex Building Preservation Trust wants to save Jumbo and our grant of £20,000 will go towards investigative works to find a long-term, sustainable use.
Chetham’s Library was founded in 1653 and is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. Our grant of £10,000 goes towards the specialist clean of the library and book collection – that means dusting approximately 1,108 metres of shelving and over 14,000 books!
Culture & Sport Glasgow –known as Glasgow Life – manages Glasgow’s museums and collections, caring for 6.5 million artefacts across nine museums. Our grant of £7,000 goes towards the purchase of the new, modern microscope to help the conservation team better assess and understand their collections.
The Stroud Subscription Rooms Charitable Trust looks after The Sub Rooms – a unique and vibrant community venue popular with local residents. Our small grant of £5,000 will go towards opening works of their impressive external balcony – allowing them to plan the next steps of the balcony’s restoration.

With 146 years of dedicated service, Union Chapel’s organ urgently requires vital repairs. Union Chapel Project is an independent secular charity operating within Union Chapel’s Grade I and II listed buildings. Our grant of £25,000 will support repairs of the historically significant organ.
Llanelli Railway Goods Shed is a Grade II listed building in a deprived area of Wales. The next phase of their restoration project aims to sensitively repair the main shed and provide further facilities – our grant of £15,000 will help develop the trust’s business and design plans.
Poltimore House is a Grade II* listed, At Risk building that was left neglected in recent years until the Poltimore House Trust was established to save it. Our grant of £25,000 will go towards the salary of a Development Manager to drive and support the next phase of their work.
Based in Cromford Mills, the First Mill is Grade I listed, At Risk and in a poor state of disrepair. The Arkwright Society looks after Cromford Mills and is setting out a plan to look after the mills for the next 10 years. Our grant of £30,000 will go towards urgent works on the First Mill to prevent further deterioration.
